my cat had blood too when he had a uti- took a few days on meds for it to go away- or it might be his kidneys the test should give you results on that- good luck-

    I’m sorry to hear that.

UTI’s are very common in cats. They tend to not drink enough water, and since you can’t really make a cat drink more some vets recommend feeding them can food mixed with dry. (canned food has a high water content.)

Did they run any bloodwork on max to make sure he wasn’t in renal failure? (kidney problems).

It could be kidney problems which can be treated by taking him in to get Sub Q fluids.

It could just be a really bad UTI.. sometimes these things can hang around for quiet a while!

I hope everything comes out o.k.! Good luck to you and max.

It could be anything from cystitis to kidney stones to something worse. Make sure you are feeding a good cat food, not something cheap from the grocery store. If the food is not high quality, the cat could get FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrome), and can keep getting it over and over. The good news is that a high quality food means putting out a few more bucks up front, but it will save you a lot of vet bills in the future. Let’s hope that’s all it is.

There can be a multitude of different things wrong or nothing wrong. Blood in the urine in itself can be an infection.
As far as the crystals go I am gonna point you away from your vets advice and tell you to stop feeding that crap prescription food or any dry food and start feeding canned foods w/o gravy. The system needs WATER
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Please read about cat nutrition.

cats with crystals in there urine will strain to urinate. this will cause some blood in there urine. the ultrasound will show if there are any bladder stones which causes crystals to form in there bladder. special food from your veterinarian can dissolve the stones if there are stones in your cats bladder. this sometimes help, but he might need surgery to remove the stones.

if your cat max stops urinating at anytime that means he is urinary blocked. if can not urinate he will die if he does not get medical attention. if he starts screaming in his litter box and is pushing and straining to urinate get him a animal hospital right away.

If your vet can’t figure it out, get a new vet. I had a male cat who almost died from FUS – Feline Urinary Syndrome. He’d had bloody urine for some time and the vet put him on antibiotics. I came home from work one day and he was face down in his cat box and cold. Got him to an emergency vet in time, but it was touch and go. He’s been on a very strict diet since then -h e was about 4 yrs old at the time and he’s now 12. He only eats Science Diet CD/S that I can only get at the vet, but it’s worth it. Some cats are more susceptible to the crap they put in the commercial foods. They are high in ash and other stuff that’s not healthy for urinary tracts. The upside of the special diet is that our current vet asks me if I brush my cat’s teeth because they are so healthy (yeah right!). The special cat food has kept him healthy in more ways than one!

Did they change his food? Maybe he needs a different food?

omg! my cat had the same exact thing. the vet said its gall stones in its bladder. you have to buy special food from the vet. for me, it went away, but get in taken care of asap!
